We went to England for 5 days. This is the last trip in 2014. We love England... :-) It was a first time for my husband to go to Cambridge. It takes 1.5 hours from Kings Cross or Liverpool station in London.
It was cold, but it was better weather than Brussels....
We enjoyed Cambridge very much. First of all, we attended an evensong at Kings College chapel. The service took 1 hour and the King's voices sang. It was amazing... Of course they had beautiful voices, the chapel has fantastic acoustics so there was marvereous reververations while they sang. I felt goose bumps. This choir consists of boys only. The sopranos are young boys from Kings prep school and the rest study at Cambridge. They study hard and enjoy singing... We also heard a mixed choir perform the next day. We felt it was worth visiting Cambridge just to listen to the choirs.
We joined a 2 hour walking tour. Our guide took us to Queens' college and St. Johns college. The best part of the tour were the many good stories and that we could go inside two colleges. We crossed the mathematical bridge. There is a myth that the bridge was designed and built by Sir Isaac Newton without the use of nuts or bolts. However, the bridge was not constructed until 22 years after he died.
When we crossed the bridge, we saw a dining hall set for a dinner. Unfortunately, college dining halls can only be used by college members. Our guide told us 3 course meal costs £15. It is very cheap.
We had to pass through a corridor to reach the inner courtyard. The buildings around the courtyard contained the dorms and the dining hall. We saw many students who were leaving for Christmas holiday!
I would like to explain a little bit about the Cambridge university system. The University of Cambridge consists of 31 colleges. Students study at a faculty and also under supervision in their college. Students take a test once a year and if they can't pass, they have to leave. They only have one chance. By the way, graduates of the University of Cambridge have won 88 Nobel prizes. We really enjoyed hearing those stories from our guide.. We want to go to Oxford next time to see how the other half live.
